Once the structure is on the ground, the real grind begins. Concrete gets crushed on site or trucked to a recycler where it’s processed into road base or aggregate. Steel goes to scrap yards. Timber, brick, and clean fill each have their own streams.

Contamination complicates this. If the site had oil spills, chemical drums, or process residues soaked into the concrete, that material needs classified disposal, which costs far more than clean fill. Modern industrial jobs target high recycling rates. Well-run projects divert eighty to ninety percent of material away from landfill. It’s better for the environment, and on large jobs, it’s better for the budget.

Site handover is a formal thing

The last phase is often the one owners underestimate. The contractor doesn’t just leave once the rubble is gone. There’s a final clearance, a check for underground obstructions like footings, tanks, and old service lines, and any required remediation of contaminated soil. If the next use is another building, the site needs to be graded and compacted to a level suitable for the incoming works.
